Vegan?

A few weeks ago a friend of mine recommended a book to me called Skinny Bitch.  It claims to be the tough love guide to getting skinny...and it is.  The girls who wrote it get straight to the point and let you know exactly how they feel.
With summer so quickly approaching, I decided to download the E-book for $3.49 (paper back $10) in hopes to get some good pointers.  I actually really enjoyed it- they had real, research proven information that gave me a lot of insight to how your body processes food, how food is processed in America, and more. But then, The Skinny Bitch took a turn on me and said that the only healthy lifestyle is a vegan lifestyle....vegan?! Well, I guess I should have known, my friend who told me about the book is a vegan.
I decided to entertain the idea and at least finish the book to take whatever information I could from it and as the book continued, veganism began to sound more and more appealing.
But I can't give up hamburgers or sushi or chicken so I made the decision to be a sometimes vegan. Is that acceptable in the vegan community? To eat vegan when possible but also enjoy the occasional, delicious, meat and cheese filled meal when I am out or someone is cooking for me?  I think thats what I am going to do.
Along with all of the tough love and information, the authors also provide shopping lists for breakfast, lunch, dinner, deserts, cooking staples, etc so I went out and bought some of the products they recommended like tofurky, unchiken, and vegan cheese and I must admit, they aren't too bad.
So what I would like to know is, are any of you vegan? Was it a hard change to make? And is it okay to be a 'sometimes vegan'?
Also, I do recommend the book for the E-book price.  Its fairly educational whether or not you decide to become a vegan.  If you don't want to purchase the book and would just like the grocery lists they offer, shoot me an email- I'm down to share.
Lastly, there is a sequel to this book called 'Skinny Bitch in the Kitch' which claims to be an everyday cookbook for Vegan Eaters.  I think it would be a wise investment for a  new ClosetVegan like me.
